Healthy Chocolate Treat
The 7th of July is World Chocolate Day.
To celebrate I thought I’d share my simple go-to chocolate recipe.
Keep these ingredients as staples in your cupboard so you can throw together a healthy treat in no time.
As a naturopath I recommend chocolate as a sometimes food. Especially if you are working on your gut health or experiencing symptoms such as bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhoea. Sweet foods can feed overgrowth of gut bacteria which can contribute to digestive discomfort.
It’s not all bad though!
Chocolate has health benefits too. Good quality chocolate is a source of magnesium which is beneficial for moods, sleep, stress as well as muscle aches and pains. Makes sense why a lot of women crave chocolate before or during their period.
Not all chocolate is made the same so make sure you read the back of the packet if you are buying it and avoid products with a long list of ingredients.
Even better make your own and know exactly what goes into it.
Coconut Chocolate
What you’ll need:
1/2 cup cacao
1/2 cup coconut oil melted
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup shredded coconut
What to do:
1. Wisk cacao, melted coconut oil and maple syrup together until smooth.
2. Mix in the shredded coconut until well combined.
3. Spoon mixture into silicone moulds. I used an ice cube shape however you can use a fun shape mould or use mini cup cake moulds. If you don’t have silicone moulds, use a muffin tray and line the holes with baking paper.
4. Refrigerate until set or freeze for quicker setting times.
5. Enjoy!
