Chocolate Hot Cross Bliss Balls

This healthy recipe is themed for Easter however, it can be enjoyed year round.

If you are entertaining for Easter, this is a perfect recipe to make in advance. It’s super simple to make but, the extra little detail will make it look like you’ve spent hours decorating a themed dessert.

Outside of Easter this is a great snack for when you are on the go. You can make them in bulk, store in the freezer and take out as you need.

Nuts mixed with dried fruit can sometimes be a hard for our guts to digest, so this recipe is definitely a sometimes food. A tip is to take small bites, chew slowly and eat on an empty stomach. This allows the body to digest the fruit sugars quickly. When we eat a big meals first, foods like this can sit up high waiting to be processed and start to ferment causing unwanted symptoms like gas and bloating.

If your gut symptoms are triggered by something sweet like bliss balls, my SIBO blog post might provide some helpful insight into what might be going on. You can read that here.

These bliss balls are gluten free, dairy free, vegan and delicious.

Chocolate Hot Cross Bun Bliss Balls

What you’ll need:

For the base:
1 cup roasted almonds
10 medjool dates
2 tbsp coconut oil melted
2 tbsp of cocoa powder
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp all spice
¼ tsp nutmeg
¼ tsp ground cloves
Dash of vanilla extract

For the cross:
½ cup cashews
¼ cup warm water
1 tbsp coco oil melted
2 tsp maple syrup
Pinch of salt

What to do:

  1.  Add almonds to blender and pulse into a crumble - If you like crunchy bits in your bliss balls then leave chunky bits.

  2. Add the rest of the base ingredients and blend until smooth.

  3. Pinch a tablespoon of the mix out to form balls. It helps to have wet hands.

  4. Place in the fridge or freezer to set.

  5. Add the cross ingredients to a clean blender until just combined.

  6. Spoon mixture into piping bag and add cross shape to balls. If you don’t have a piping bag you can use a zip lock bag and cut a tiny bit of the corner.

  7. Chill in the freezer for an hour and serve.
